Cornwall's wealth is in its spectacular natural beauty and maritime delights...and from The Metropole, you can have access to it all! Nearly every inch of its coastline can be walked. It also enjoys one of the mildest climates in the UK, thanks to the Gulf Stream, bringing warm air from the Caribbean towards North West Europe. Cornwall's popularity has not been overlooked by the film and television industry and favourites such as Saving Grace, Ladies in Lavender and Poldark have all been filmed here.
Cornwall is a land of myth and magic. Tales abound about King Arthur, Bolster the Giant, Cornish Piskies and other legendary and mythical characters. Neolithic stone circles and ancient sites, such as Men-an-Tol and the Merry Maidens, can be found in the far west, amazing surfing beaches and high cliffs on the northcoast and rolling green hills and hidden creeks on the south coast. Maritime activities can be enjoyed all over Cornwall, including sailing, kayaking, fishing and wind-surfing – and whilst you are out and about on the water, you might spot dolphins or even basking sharks, the gentle giants seen in Cornish waters during the warmer months.
There are golf courses galore, from the Nicklaus designed course at St Mellion to the championship course at Trevose Golf & Country Club. Hikers can explore the South West Coast Path, which wends its way almost round the entire coast of Cornwall and there are any number of sleepy villages and tucked-out-of-the-way pubs to discover.
If gardens are your passion, then there's plenty in Cornwall. Our milder weather means all sorts of varieties of plants and trees can grow and there's something to see all year. You can find details of some of the best through The Great Gardens of Cornwall.
All this is just the tip of the iceberg. Our team will be able to make lots of suggestions and the local Tourist Information Centre can also steer you in the right direction.
