May Day in Padstow is distinctive

April 22 2013

First some history….

Although the origin is lost in the mystery of time it is believed to go back to the ancient Celtic nations.  Held annually on May Day (1 May), the day celebrates the coming of Summer and it is also associated to ancient rites of fertility.

The festival itself starts at midnight between 30th April and 1st May at the Golden Lion Inn.

The town is dressed with greenery, flowers and flags.

Two groups of dancers perform a dancing ritual through the town following the Red Oss (the original), or the Blue Oss (Peace 'Oss).

There is much to tell, but nothing like coming to Padstow for the festival. To know more you can visit The Tourist Information website or PADSTOW.COM
